I have enjoyed catching trout while fishing in rivers for more than two decades and have learned these simple, yet extremely effective tips during that time. Two of these tips were taught to me by the man who introduced me to trout fishing, and the third was learned through experience. In any case these trout fishing tips are all extremely effective and when learned will help most anyone catch more and bigger trout while fishing in rivers.

Before outlining the tips themselves I believe that it’s critical to mention the importance that practice plays in becoming a successful trout angler. Anyone can go out and catch a few trout under twelve inches, but when it comes to catching larger and/or more experienced trout there is simply no substitute for spending time on the water practicing your craft. The more time that can be spent fishing for trout in rivers the better trout fisherman you will become, it’s as simple as that.

With that being said, let’s get down to the tips for catching more and bigger trout.

Use Ultralight Gear & Light Line – If you want to catch more and bigger trout all the trout fishing tips in the world won’t matter much if you don’t use an ultra light rod and reel spooled with light line. Many people who fish for trout in rivers tend to use fishing line and gear that’s entirely too heavy. When fishing for trout, my personal line of choice is four pound test monofilament (Stren Original to be exact). Any fishing line heavier than six pound test should be avoided at all costs. A four to six foot ultra light rod equipped with a matching reel is also in order when fishing for trout in rivers.
Live Worms Make An Excellent Trout Bait – Live worms are an excellent bait for trout when fishing in the flowing waters of either a river or stream. The best way to rig a live worm (or half of a live worm in the case of large worms such as night crawlers) is a set of gang hooks. These hooks enable the worm to be presented in an outstretched and totally natural manner. When it comes to trout fishing tips using a live worm rigged on a set of gang hooks is one of the best tips you will ever get.
A Bait Bag Saves A Ton Of Valuable Fishing Time – A bait bag is simply a small pouch that clips to your fishing vest or shirt and carries you live worms for you while you are fishing. This is incredibly advantageous to the wading river fisherman. Always having your live worms at your fingertips waiting to be “put into action” saves you a ton of valuable fishing time spent baiting up and re-baiting. If you want to start catching more and bigger trout while river fishing a bait bag is a must have item.
